The YMCA of the Sandhills in Fayetteville, NC, and Cameron, NC, offers the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course, providing the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. This comprehensive training is designed for individuals who are ready to take on the responsibility of keeping swimmers safe.

Lifeguard Certification Courses

The YMCA of the Sandhills offers lifeguard certification courses at the Fayetteville YMCA; attending each session in full over the 3-day period is required to become certified.

Our lifeguard training course equips participants with lifesaving skills, that can include water rescues, CPR, AED usage, and first aid. Upon successful completion, participants can qualify to receive an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, valid for two years and recognized nationwide.

This course is ideal for those looking to:

Lifeguard Course Overview  

• Prerequisites: Participants must meet lifeguard requirements, including a swimming skills assessment.
• Minimum Age Requirement: participants must be age 15 on or before the last day of the course (ID required); we welcome lifeguards of all ages who meet the minimum requirement!
• Training Format: Courses may be in-person instruction with classroom instruction and hands-on training in the water.
• Certification: American Red Cross lifeguard certification classes provide a two-year credential upon passing the final skills test and written exam.
• Recertification: If you already have a lifeguard certification but need renewal, we offer lifeguard recertification near me to keep your credentials up to date.

American Red Cross Requirements for Certification

• Complete all online course content in advance of the in-person skill sessions.
• Attend the entire course and participate in all skill scenarios.
• Actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during scenarios.
• Demonstrate proficiency in all required skills.
• Pass the final skills scenarios.
• Successfully pass the final written exams with a minimum grade of 80%.

Cancellation Policy

Lifeguard candidates must submit a written cancellation request via email to the Aquatics Director 14 days or more BEFORE the first class date to be considered for a credit or refund at the YMCA's discretion. Cancellation requests submitted less than 14 days prior to the first class date are not eligible for credits or refunds, but they may transfer to a future class for an additional $50 transfer fee.
